As you already know our company is called The Wooden Ladybird Company. The name came from the stationery I designed for our wedding. I originally wanted our theme colour to be red as we were married in October but as the planning process evolved and my bridesmaid loved the colour green we slowly incorporated a spectrum of autumn shades. I also remembered being fascinated with ladybirds as a child so we thought we’d incorporate some cute wooden ladybirds I’d purchased into our stationery. And that is the story of how we decided on the name!
We started our business just after we were married five years ago. We had a tight budget for our wedding and to save money, like so many brides do, I made our own invitations, place cards etc. I also wanted to spend a little extra on teacup favours and chocolate fountains!! However I was surprised when I received so many nice comments about how lovely it was to go to a wedding where everything had been handmade with care, the guests seemed to feel it added to their enjoyment of the day.
My friend was getting married soon after us and asked me to make her stationery as a wedding present as she’d loved mine, I was really nervous as I really wanted her to love what I created. As she was only having 25 guests and they were all close friends and family I tried to think outside the box and come up with something totally different and that was when I decided to make wooden heart shaped invitations that her guests would be able to hang in their homes and keep. Luckily my brother is a joiner so he helped with the cutting etc. My friend loved them and said that when she gave her mother-in-law-to-be the invitation in its gift bag she actually cried (with happiness I’d just like to add!) and so The Wooden Ladybird Company was born. It’s now five years since we began and we are still evolving and striving to bring the most unique products to the north east.
I still enjoy designing and making stationery as every event is different and each with its own challenges and expectations. We’re also absolutely mad about Christmas so watch out for our seasonal items, we always have great fun designing and making them! We also hope that our company will grow into something which we can eventually pass on to our son who is autistic, and so that provides lots of motivation for us to continually evolve!
What drives us as a company is a passion for providing high quality items at affordable prices comparable to the high street but with that added uniqueness of handmade. I remember how important it was to me to have everything exactly the way I wanted at my wedding which is why we work on a bespoke basis to ensure everything is how you imagined but for the price you can afford.
Our products are different because we are always trying new techniques and we always have something new in the pipeline. We were the first company in the north east to provide wooden wedding stationery. We hand draw all our designs then transfer it it the design software to engrave on to the wood. We then hand paint any final details that are needed. As everything in done in house in our studio we have complete control over every step of the process from design to making to finishing ensuring a high quality product.
So hopefully that gives you a better insight into where our company came from, what our company is about and where we’re planning on going over the next few years!
